For the second year in a row, the Academy at Palumbo won a Governor’s Civic Engagement Award for the percentage of eligible voters we registered. While we received a Silver Award in 2022, we were able to earn a Gold Award this year by registering 90% of eligible students to vote. This effort was coordinated by Voter Champion and Social Studies teacher Charlie McGeehan in collaboration with PA Youth Vote. Students from the National Honor Society (listed below) helped their peers register to vote:
- Emily Chew
- Linna Gao
- Makayla Hudson
- Sydney Huynh
- Angela Lin
- Calvin Luong
- Mythi Nguyen
- Niyah Sann
- Deshuang Su
- Dewei Su
- Shirley Zhang
In addition, more than two dozen students served as poll workers across the city in the November and May elections through a collaboration with the City Commissioners. This year, the Commissioners hosted a poll worker training at Palumbo.
We look forward to continuing to find ways for our students to be civically engaged in the future.
