FALL ATHLETICS LETTER
To our Palumbo Families:
I hope this message finds you well, healthy, and safe. Throughout the summer, we have received many questions regarding athletics, and what that might look like during the pandemic. Following Governor Wolf’s recommendation, the School District of Philadelphia officially announced that athletics will be postponed until January 2021.
We know how important athletics are, and the life lessons that are learned in sports. We also acknowledge that there are social, emotional, and physical benefits to the camaraderie of sportsmanship. So, although we will not be holding in-person practices or meetings, we’d like to move forward in creating a virtual experience for our student athletes. We envision these meet-ups as a way to encourage athletes to continue their conditioning and skill development, while holding themselves and their peers accountable.
The first of these virtual sessions will be Monday, August 17th, at 7pm, and is open to both students and their parents/guardians/trusted adults. There, you will meet Palumbo’s coaching staff and hear more about our virtual sports program. Following our general meeting will hold break-out sessions with our Fall coaches. Students and families can decide which session to attend and learn from specific coaches how athletic engagement will look.
This is a difficult time, but we know athletics will eventually resume, perhaps later than we’d hoped. However, I take our students’ health and safety into consideration first. We may not be taking to the fields this semester, but I want to encourage our athletes to stay strong in mind, body, and spirit so when we do run out onto our courts and fields, we will be stronger than ever.
